Dr. Swati Kanakia - MD, DCH, PhD
Dr. Swati Kanakia completed her graduate studies from the Grant Medical College Mumbai, with multiple distinctions in various subjects. Dr. Kanakia went on to specialize in Pediatrics at the same institute. During her post graduate career too she excelled in academics and received a gold medal in the DCH examination. From 1992-2000 she completed her PhD in Applied Biology with Plasma Borne Infections in Thalassemia as her dissertation topic. During this time she worked at the Division of Pediatric Hematology Oncology, Department of Pediatrics at the Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and Hospital. She trained in all aspects of pediatric hematology and oncology during her tenure.
To gain more experience in pediatric oncology she visited St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, USA on a Travelling Scholarship from the International Outreach of the hospital. On her return from USA, she was awarded Senior Research Fellow & Research Associateship for a period of six years by the CSIR Council for Industrial and Scientific Research. She was also awarded Bibi Chand Scholarship by Indian Academy of Pediatrics. At present, she is attached to the Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre, and SRCC Children’s Hospital in the city of Mumbai as a consultant Pediatric Hematologist Oncologist.
She manages childhood cancers like leukemias, lymphomas, Wilms tumour, neuroblastoma and hepatoblastoma. Her expertise also extends to haematological conditions like thalassemia, hemophilia, low platelets, ITP, anemia or bleeding in children and immune deficiency diseases.
As a woman and mother of 2 grown up children, Dr. Swati Kanakia is very sensitive to the challenges associated with children suffering with cancer from all walks of life and different cultural backgrounds.
She lectures extensively and has been responsible for training post graduate pediatric students in the field of pediatric hematology oncology. She is a very popular teacher amongst family physicians, pediatricians and Post Graduate pediatric students. Dr. Kanakia has anchored 100 episodes of India’s only Continuing Medical Education program on Doordarshan 2 and has been participating actively in India’s first online training portal – HealthVarsity for doctors.
Dr. Swati Kanakia is a recognized teacher for DNB Pediatric students and is responsible for their training at the Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre. The DNB Board has also appointed her as an examiner.
Dr. Swati Kanakia is a member of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics as well as the Pediatric Hematology Oncology chapter of IAP and ISPID (Indian Society for Primary Immune Deficiency). She is also a member of the Indian Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, and the secretary of the Mumbai Hematology Group.
In addition to her medical qualifications she also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management – PGDBM .
